The History Of The Berlin Conference And The Colonial Scramble For Africa 1884-1885 (Short Video)
The Berlin Conference, held from 1884 to 1885, marked a significant chapter in the history of Africa. European powers, driven by a desire for colonial expansion, gathered in Berlin to divide and conquer the African continent. Under the guise of "civilizing" Africa, they negotiated territorial claims, drawing borders that disregarded the rich cultural, ethnic, and linguistic diversity of the African people. This conference paved the way for decades of exploitation, resource extraction, and the suppression of African independence.
With the #BerlinConference, we unravel the legacy of imperialism and its enduring impact on Africa. Join us as we explore the historical context, the key players, and the long-term consequences of this pivotal event. Let us learn from history to build a more just ...

The Berlin Conference | 136 years on with historian Prof. Mathole Motshekga
The 26th of February marked the day 136 years ago, on which the notorious Berlin Conference wrapped up and led to what became known as the "Scramble for Africa". Many would say that beyond slavery, there is no single event in modern African history whose consequences have been so dire for the continent as the Berlin Conference of 1884-85. Held over three months, the conference set the ground rules for the partition of Africa and tragically no African was invited or even made privy to the conference decisions. To help us understand what the legacy of this conference ...
